Why Sylcon

History

Starting off from a very humble background, Sylcon’s business journey began in the early 1940’s. The unique entrepreneurial spirit that has driven this family owned brand to become a household name across Kerala has now been refined, to establish three lines of businesses, across Fashion, Food and Supermarket segments in the B2C retail industry.

Purpose

Since 2021, Sylcon is on a unique Purpose led journey. Sylcon’s purpose is to provide every household an opportunity to connect to their passion for tried and trusted Customer experience by into B2C retail industry. This is further customized uniquely across Fashion, Food and Supermarket as the group is undertaking its transformation journey from 2021.

A LEGACY THAT SPANS OVER 8 DECADES

Founder of Sylcon

Mr. Hamsoo had to go to Ceylon at the age of 12 (in 1942). To join a belt manufacturing factory as a helper. This company was owned by a Keralite. After 2 years, he started his own belt manufacturing factory in Ceylon. In 1950, he came to Chennai (then Madras) to set up a bag manufacturing company. 12 years later, he was cheated by his colleague who was supplying materials to Kerala and in 1963, he decided to move to Kochi and started a retail store named ‘Madras Plastic House’ in Broadway, which was renamed in 1965 as ‘Mariza’. This was also the time when shoes were ‘displayed’ in stores (previously they were usually hung).

In 1968, we started a showroom in Jos Junction and in 1989, we started a fashion store near Kavitha Theater where the fashion conscious customers from all over Kerala used to throng to buy garments and shoes for their entire family. (This was the major turning point for Sylcon Brand). This store functioned for 20 years. Almost all major brands of shoes were launched in Kerala by Sylcon. (Woodland, Lee Cooper, Red Tape, Phoenix, Clarks, Mescos.) In 2009 - we started expanding the Fashion (Shoes, Bags) business (Kottayam) and we currently have 13 outlets across 7 districts. Sylcon’s The depth of CX which the brand has gathered over 75 years - There was a desire to get this CX to home - via daily needs.

For over three decades, Sylcon has been one of the most renowned and leading footwear and fashion brands in Kerala. Their customer friendly business model and uncompromising quality across sales and service has brought glory. Sylcon is committed to ensure a unique and remarkable shopping experience for their loyal clientele in every possible way. Looking back, the brand which had its humble beginnings in the early 1940’s, surged forward thanks to the Founder’s business optimism, competitive spirit and relentless pursuit of success. His unique entrepreneurial spirit fuelled by strong business ethics, has driven this family-owned brand to be a renowned household name across Kerala. Today, Sylcon has made its mark across various businesses including the fashion, food and supermarket segments in the B2C retail industry.

PRIORITISING CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

Back in the 80’s, when shoe stores in Kerala hung their products to display them, Hamzoo set the benchmark by showcasing them in shelves. The immaculately maintained stores were committed to uphold a customer-centric philosophy, and ensure no compromises when it comes to comfort, quality and durability. Today, Sylcon takes pride in having introduced numerous prominent and prestigious footwear brands into the Kerala market including Woodland, Lee Cooper, Red Tape, Phoenix, Clarks, Mescos and more. In 2009, Sylcon initiated expansion of the fashion, shoes and bags business into Kottayam, resulting in 13 outlets across 7 districts. The brand also set up two stores in Bengaluru and one in Mysuru in 2014, 16 showrooms across Attingal, Eratupetta and Padma in 2019 and diversified and expanded further in 2022 with 13 fashion showrooms, 2 supermarkets, a central kitchen and a restaurant. Owing to the impact of unparalleled customer experience and employees’ loyalty Sylcon has amassed in 8 decades, the brand is incredibly notable at home and beyond. The pulse of advancement has kept the brand alive in the competitive industry!
